“5-hour limit reached” means Claude has exhausted the capacity available in your current five-hour session window. The message should show a reset time. Paid users with eligible usage credits can continue on pay-as-you-go billing; otherwise, wait for the displayed reset.
What to do now
- Check the exact reset time shown in Claude.
- Open Settings → Usage to see which limit is active.
- Start a shorter conversation after reset instead of continuing a very large thread.
- If eligible, enable usage credits on the web for paid overflow.
What the five-hour limit means
Claude’s paid capacity is not expressed as one guaranteed number of messages. Anthropic uses a session window, and the amount of work available inside that window depends on the workload. Claude warns users as they approach the limit, then blocks additional included usage and displays the time when the session allowance resets.
A five-hour window does not mean you receive five hours of continuous generation. It is a capacity window that can be consumed faster by demanding work.
Why the limit can arrive sooner than expected
- Long conversations: Claude must process more existing context with each new turn.
- Large files: Documents and code repositories add material to the context.
- Tool use: Research, code execution, and agentic work can require more computation.
- Model choice: Different models and features can have different capacity costs.
- Shared usage: Claude and Claude Code usage may count toward the same plan allowances.
Two people on the same plan can therefore receive very different numbers of prompts. Fixed “messages per five hours” estimates are unreliable.
Five-hour limits vs weekly limits
The session limit is not the only meter. Anthropic also applies weekly limits to paid plans, including limits that can cover all models and separate capacity for particular model families. Reaching a weekly limit will not necessarily be fixed by the next five-hour reset.
Open Settings → Usage and compare the displayed reset times. The in-product meter is more reliable than estimating from how long you were actively typing.
How usage credits change the message
Anthropic now offers usage credits to eligible individual paid subscribers. With credits enabled, Claude can continue after included usage is exhausted and charge the purchased balance at standard API rates. The limit message may say that the five-hour limit resets at a certain time while Claude continues with usage credits.
Usage credits are optional. They are useful for occasional overflow, but repeated pay-as-you-go use can cost more than moving to a plan with a larger included allowance.
How to enable usage credits
- Sign in to Claude on the web.
- Open Settings and then Usage.
- Look for the usage credits or extra usage option.
- Add a payment method and choose a spending limit before enabling pay-as-you-go use.
Anthropic says mobile-app subscribers may need to enable and purchase usage credits on the web. If the option is missing, verify the plan, billing platform, account, and regional availability.
Ways to make Claude capacity last longer
- Start a new chat when the old conversation contains irrelevant history.
- Upload only the files needed for the current task.
- Ask for a concise answer when a long explanation is unnecessary.
- Break a large job into defined stages and save the useful output outside the chat.
- Use the most capable model only when the task benefits from it.
- Watch the Usage page before starting a time-sensitive session.
What if the message appears immediately?
First confirm the reset time and weekly meters. Then check whether Claude Code, another device, or an earlier large conversation used the shared allowance. If the Usage page contradicts the blocking message, save a screenshot and contact Anthropic support with the account email, plan, reset time, and affected product.
Should you wait, buy credits, or upgrade?
Wait when the interruption is rare, use credits for occasional urgent overflow, and upgrade only when limits repeatedly interrupt valuable work. A higher plan is easier to justify when you can measure the time lost to resets over several normal weeks.
