Gemini File Upload Failed? Limits, Errors, and Fixes

Generic document, media, archive, and code files passing through an AI upload check from warning to success

Verified against official Google documentation · July 28, 2026

If a Gemini file upload failed, first check the number, size, and type of files, then try the same file in a new chat at gemini.google.com. Gemini currently accepts up to 10 supported files in one prompt, subject to availability. Each video can be up to 2 GB; most other supported files can be up to 100 MB.

An upload can still fail even when a file is below those headline limits. Gemini also applies rolling usage limits, has a separate storage allowance for Gemini Apps activity, and may restrict Drive access on work or school accounts. Use the error message and the checks below to identify the actual cause before converting, compressing, or deleting anything.

Quick fixes to try first

  1. Confirm that you are signed in to the intended Google Account.
  2. Upload one small file in a new Gemini chat.
  3. Keep the prompt to 10 files or fewer.
  4. Keep non-video files below 100 MB and videos below 2 GB.
  5. If Gemini says it failed to analyze the file, remove it and upload it again.
  6. For Drive files on a work or school account, ask the Workspace administrator whether apps in Gemini are enabled.
  7. If you reached a rolling limit, wait for the limit to reset instead of repeatedly retrying.

Google says Gemini Apps support most file types, but it does not publish a permanent exhaustive extension list on the upload help page. A file extension that worked previously may still fail because of its contents, account access, temporary capacity, or a damaged file. Test the original file before assuming that every file with the same extension is unsupported.

1. Make sure you are signed in to Gemini

File upload is a signed-in feature. If the Add files button is missing, the page keeps returning to the start screen, or the upload never begins, verify the Google Account shown in Gemini. Open gemini.google.com directly in a current version of Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Opera, or Edge and start a new chat.

  • Do not rely on a Gemini tab that has been open for several days; reload it or start a new tab.
  • If several Google Accounts are signed in, confirm which account owns the Google AI plan or Workspace access.
  • Try a private browser window to rule out stale account cookies or an extension conflict.
  • On mobile, update the Gemini app and test the web version to separate an app problem from an account problem.

If paid features are missing after signing in, check the account and plan before troubleshooting the file itself. HiseHub’s Google AI Pro benefits troubleshooting guide explains the same account and eligibility checks for plan benefits.

2. Check the file count, size, and actual contents

Gemini allows up to 10 supported files in a single prompt, subject to availability. If you selected more, divide the task into smaller groups. Keeping related files together usually produces better answers than uploading an arbitrary batch of unrelated documents.

Check the real file size in the device’s file manager rather than estimating it from page count or video length. A presentation with embedded media, a spreadsheet with large images, or a scanned PDF can be much larger than it appears. For non-video files, stay under 100 MB per file. For video, stay under 2 GB per file and also check the duration limit.

Renaming an extension does not convert a file. Changing .heic to .jpg, for example, leaves the underlying format unchanged and can make the upload harder to process. Open the file in its original app and export a fresh copy to a common format instead.

3. Video and audio have duration limits too

A video can be smaller than 2 GB and still exceed the allowed total duration. Without Google AI Pro or Ultra, the total video uploaded in a prompt can be up to five minutes. Pro and Ultra extend the total to one hour. For audio, the corresponding totals are 10 minutes without those plans and up to three hours with Pro or Ultra.

If the file exceeds the duration allowance, trim it to the relevant segment or split it into logical sections. Include timestamps and explain what Gemini should inspect. A smaller focused clip is often more reliable than a long recording because Gemini has less unrelated content to process.

4. Fix “Delete data to upload file”

This message refers to Gemini Apps storage, not your Google Drive or Google Workspace storage quota. Gemini Apps activity includes chats and uploaded files. Chats or Gems containing videos, photos, Drive files, or NotebookLM sources can consume more of that separate allowance.

For a personal Google Account:

  1. Open Gemini.
  2. Select Settings & help → Activity.
  3. Review and delete only the Gemini Apps activity you no longer need.
  4. Wait several minutes for the storage calculation to update, then try the upload again.

Deleting activity is a data-loss decision. Export or retain anything important first, and do not remove an entire history just to avoid waiting. If the error remains, Google recommends waiting and then deleting additional old activity or Gems only as needed.

For a work or school account, only the Workspace administrator can delete the relevant Gemini Apps activity. Contact the administrator rather than clearing Drive files, because Drive storage is not the quota named by this error.

5. Fix “You’ve reached your limit for chats with files”

Gemini applies rolling limits to file uploads and analysis. Google does not promise one universal upload count because capacity can depend on the plan, model, prompt complexity, conversation length, and the size and number of files. When this error appears, the reliable fixes are to wait for the allowance to replenish or use a plan with higher limits.

Do not keep resubmitting the same batch every few seconds. Repeated attempts do not reset the allowance and make it harder to tell whether the next failure is a usage limit or a damaged file. Save the prompt, wait for the time shown by Gemini when available, and retry once with a small file.

6. Fix “Gemini failed to analyze your file”

Google’s first recommendation for this message is simple: re-upload the file. Before doing so, open it locally and confirm that it is not empty, password-protected, partially downloaded, or corrupted. Then create a new Gemini chat and upload only that file with a short, specific prompt.

  • Export a fresh PDF instead of using a damaged scan.
  • Remove encryption or password protection from a copy you are permitted to modify.
  • Flatten unusual layers, comments, or embedded objects when a document repeatedly fails.
  • Save spreadsheets with ordinary values and headers before asking Gemini to analyze them.
  • Split a very large document by chapter or section.

If Gemini accepts the file but misses details, the problem may be context rather than transport. Google warns that large uploads can produce responses that miss connections across the material. Reduce the amount of content, ask about one section at a time, or use a plan with a larger context window. Our Google AI Pro vs Ultra comparison explains the broader plan differences.

7. Fix Google Drive and NotebookLM upload problems

Adding a local file and referencing a Drive or NotebookLM source are different paths. For Drive, Gemini requires Keep Activity to be on and Google Workspace to be connected to Gemini Apps. If the connection is unavailable, Gemini may offer to connect it.

On work or school accounts, the organization controls access. The Workspace administrator must enable apps in Gemini, and feature availability can vary by license, location, device, and administrator policy. If a local upload works but Add from Drive does not, that is strong evidence of a connection or policy issue rather than a file-size problem.

  • Confirm that Gemini and Drive are using the same Google Account.
  • Check whether Keep Activity and connected apps are available.
  • Ask the administrator whether the Google Workspace app is enabled for Gemini.
  • Test a local copy only if organizational policy permits downloading it.

8. ZIP files, code folders, and GitHub repositories

A ZIP file can be up to 100 MB and contain up to 10 files, subject to availability. It cannot include video or audio files. If an archive fails, extract it locally, check its contents, remove unsupported media, and create a fresh archive. Do not upload unknown archives without scanning them first.

For code, use Gemini’s More uploads → Import Code flow. One code folder or one GitHub repository can be added to a chat, with up to 5,000 files and a maximum size of 100 MB. Exclude generated dependencies, build output, caches, secrets, and large binaries before upload. A repository URL pasted as ordinary prompt text is not the same as importing the repository.

9. Rule out a browser, app, or network problem

If even a small known-good file fails, test the upload path:

  1. Reload Gemini and start a new chat.
  2. Try a private browser window with extensions disabled.
  3. Temporarily disable a VPN, proxy, aggressive content blocker, or managed DNS filter.
  4. Try another supported browser or the Gemini web app.
  5. Change networks to determine whether a firewall is interrupting the transfer.
  6. Upload one small plain-text or image file as a control test.

Restore security tools after testing. If the upload works only when a company filter is disabled, ask the administrator to review the blocked request rather than permanently weakening the device’s protection.

10. Protect sensitive information before uploading

A successful upload is not automatically an appropriate upload. Remove passwords, API keys, financial identifiers, health records, private customer data, and confidential company information unless you are authorized to use the account and its data protections for that material. Check the applicable Gemini privacy notice and organizational policy before uploading regulated or proprietary content.

For code folders and archives, inspect hidden files and environment configuration. Files such as .env, private keys, access tokens, and production credentials should not be included in a troubleshooting upload.

Frequently asked questions

What file types can Gemini upload?

Google says Gemini Apps support most file types and specifically describes documents, spreadsheets, photos, videos, audio, ZIP archives, code folders, GitHub repositories, Drive files, and NotebookLM notebooks. Because there is no permanent exhaustive extension list on the help page, test the actual file and follow the displayed error.

Why does a file below 100 MB still fail?

The upload may exceed the file-count, duration, rolling usage, storage, or context allowance. It can also fail because the file is damaged, password-protected, blocked by a Workspace policy, or interrupted by the browser or network.

Does deleting Google Drive files fix Gemini’s data-limit error?

Not normally. Google says the “Delete data to upload file” message refers to Gemini Apps activity storage, which is independent of Google Drive and Workspace storage. Review Gemini Apps Activity instead.

Will upgrading guarantee that every file works?

No. Paid plans provide higher limits and larger context windows, but file integrity, account access, supported content, browser behavior, and organizational restrictions still matter.
