ChatGPT credits are optional pay-as-you-go funds for supported features after your plan’s included allowance is used. They do not replace ChatGPT Plus or Pro, and they do not automatically raise every ChatGPT message limit.

The short answer

  • Your subscription allowance is consumed before purchased credits.
  • Credits work only with supported features shown in your account, not every ChatGPT feature.
  • Plus and Pro users can buy credits for eligible agentic tools such as Codex.
  • Auto top-up is optional and can be limited with a target balance and monthly cap.

What are ChatGPT credits?

Credits are a separate balance that can pay for eligible usage beyond what is included with a plan. OpenAI describes them as flexible usage rather than a second subscription. Your normal included allowance is used first. If an eligible feature reaches that allowance and credits are available, the feature can continue by drawing from the credit balance.

The important word is eligible. A credit balance is not a universal pass for unlimited ChatGPT messages. OpenAI can change the supported feature list, and the Usage page in your account is the best place to see what your balance can currently fund.

Which features can use credits?

OpenAI’s current documentation lists supported agentic features rather than ordinary chat as the main use case. Examples include Codex for eligible Plus and Pro users and ChatGPT productivity tools where available. The published rate card also lists supported spreadsheet and presentation work.

Availability can differ by plan, product rollout, and account. If a feature does not show a credit option on your Usage page, buying credits elsewhere in the account should not be assumed to unlock it.

How credits interact with Plus and Pro

  • Included usage comes first: OpenAI uses the allowance bundled with your plan before charging the credit balance.
  • Your plan remains active: Adding credits does not upgrade, downgrade, pause, or extend the subscription.
  • One balance can serve supported tools: Eligible tools may draw from the same shared credit balance.
  • Rates vary by work: Longer or more complex agentic tasks can consume more credits than a short task.

This means credits are best treated as overflow capacity. If you repeatedly spend more on credits than the price difference to a higher plan, compare the upgrade before continuing to top up.

How to check your credit balance

  1. Open ChatGPT on the web or in the Codex app.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Select Usage or Usage Dashboard.
  4. Review the balance, recent usage, supported features, and any available rate card.

If the balance looks wrong, confirm that you are signed in with the same account that bought the credits. A work account, personal account, Apple login, and Google login can look similar while remaining separate OpenAI accounts.

How auto top-up works

Eligible users can enable auto top-up from the Usage Dashboard. You choose a minimum balance and a target balance. When the available balance drops below the minimum, OpenAI can charge the default payment method for the amount needed to restore the target.

OpenAI also allows a monthly recharge limit. Set one before relying on automatic top-ups, especially when an agentic task can continue for a long time. If your balance is already below the chosen minimum when auto top-up is enabled, a purchase may happen immediately.

Why credits may not be working

  • The feature is not currently eligible for credit billing.
  • You are using a different OpenAI account from the purchasing account.
  • Your plan does not include access to the feature.
  • The credit purchase or account balance has not finished updating.
  • A payment method failed or the monthly auto top-up cap was reached.
  • A separate model, safety, or product limit is blocking the task.

Start with the Usage Dashboard instead of repeatedly buying more. It provides the strongest account-specific evidence about the balance and the feature that consumed it.

Are ChatGPT credits refundable or transferable?

Do not assume credits can be moved between accounts or refunded after purchase. Credit terms can vary by product and region. Review the checkout terms before confirming a purchase and use OpenAI support for an account-specific billing dispute.

Should you buy credits or upgrade?

Buy a small credit amount for occasional overflow. Consider a higher plan when usage repeatedly exceeds the included allowance and the upgrade covers the same workflow. Keep auto top-up off until you understand how quickly your normal tasks consume the balance.
