ChatGPT Credits: Features, Plan Usage & API Billing Explained

ChatGPT credits are a separate pay-as-you-go balance for supported features after included plan usage is reached. They are not a replacement for a ChatGPT subscription, not a general pass for unlimited messages, and not the same thing as prepaid OpenAI API credits. What credits can pay for depends on your account, plan, region, and the feature shown in Settings → Usage.

The short answer

Your plan’s included usage is used first. Buying credits does not change that plan or raise every ChatGPT limit.
OpenAI’s current personal-plan guidance lists Codex, ChatGPT Work, and ChatGPT for Excel as supported features when available to the plan; coverage can change.
Feature credits are managed in ChatGPT Settings → Usage or in the Codex app’s Usage & Billing; the option may not be available to every account.
Auto top-up purchases usage credits when the balance falls below your chosen minimum, up to the monthly reload limit you set.
ChatGPT and the OpenAI API have separate billing systems. A positive API balance does not fund ChatGPT credits, and a ChatGPT credit balance does not fund API calls.

What are ChatGPT credits?

OpenAI describes personal ChatGPT credits as an add-on that lets eligible users continue using supported features after their included plan allowance is reached. The credit balance is tied to the applicable OpenAI account and supported feature, rather than being a universal number of extra ChatGPT messages.

The word supported matters. OpenAI’s current help article says credits can be used with Codex, ChatGPT Work, and ChatGPT for Excel when those features are available to your plan. The list and eligibility may change, so the Usage page and the rate card shown for your account are stronger evidence than a third-party chart or an old screenshot.

Do not mix these five balances

OpenAI explicitly says the usage-credit balance is separate from the ChatGPT wallet and that these credits are not API credits. The API also has request and token rate limits, organization limits, and spend controls that are independent of an API prepaid balance.

How included usage and credits are applied

Your plan provides an included allowance for a feature or workflow.
You use that included allowance first.
When a supported feature reaches its included limit, ChatGPT may offer an option to add credits if your account is eligible.
If you confirm and have a positive balance, eligible activity can draw from the shared supported-feature credit balance.
Your subscription remains the same; credits simply provide a paid overflow path for the features they support.

This is why buying credits does not necessarily remove a “message limit” notice in ordinary ChatGPT chat. A limit can belong to a model, plan, tool, workspace, or safety/rate-control system that credits do not cover.

Which ChatGPT features can use credits?

As checked on September 4, 2026, OpenAI’s personal-plan help article identifies Codex, ChatGPT Work, and ChatGPT for Excel as current supported feature examples when available to your plan. OpenAI also says Plus and Pro users can draw from the same agentic allowance across supported features. Do not turn that into a promise that every ChatGPT message, model, image, voice session, or future feature can be paid for with the balance.

If the account does not show Add credits after a supported limit, that may mean the purchase flow has not rolled out to the account, plan, region, or feature. It is not evidence that an API purchase will unlock it.

Where to see your balance and usage

Sign in to the ChatGPT account that owns the balance.
Open Settings → Usage in ChatGPT, or Usage & Billing in the Codex app.
Review the credit balance, recent consumption, supported feature, and any rate card or limits shown.
Before confirming a purchase, check the amount, payment method, wallet amount applied (if any), and monthly auto-reload setting.

If you use multiple logins, check the account identity carefully. A personal account, work account, Apple sign-in, and Google sign-in can look similar while holding separate plans and balances. A balance on one account cannot be assumed to appear on another.

How auto top-up works

When automatic reload is available, you choose a minimum balance and a target balance. If the balance falls below the minimum, OpenAI can purchase enough usage credits to return it to the target using the default payment method. OpenAI warns that a purchase may happen immediately when auto top-up is enabled while the balance is already below the minimum.

Set the monthly maximum before relying on automatic purchases. The maximum monthly spend controls automatic reloads, not one-time purchases. A long-running or concurrent agentic task can consume more than a simple message, so a cap is a spending boundary—not a guarantee of a fixed number of tasks.

Leave auto top-up off until you know which feature is using the balance.
Use a low target and monthly limit for an unfamiliar workflow.
Recheck the default payment method and recent usage after the first run.
Disable automatic reload when a temporary project is finished.

Credits, API prepaid balance, and service credits

ChatGPT feature credits live in the consumer ChatGPT/Codex usage flow. OpenAI API prepaid credits live in an API organization’s billing overview and are consumed by programmatic requests. OpenAI’s billing guidance says the two products have separate billing systems. API usage can also have token, request, organization, and spend limits even when the prepaid balance is positive.

OpenAI’s Service Credit Terms apply to credits redeemable for the applicable service. They say service credits are not currency, are non-transferable, and are generally non-refundable except where required by law; purchased or issued credits generally expire after one year unless a service-specific condition says otherwise. Always read the terms attached to the purchase you are making, because “ChatGPT credits,” “API credits,” and a promotional credit can have different surfaces and conditions.

Should you buy credits, change plans, or use the API?

Why credits may not work

Unsupported feature: the balance only covers features OpenAI makes eligible for that account.
Plan or rollout difference: purchase availability can vary by plan, account, region, and feature rollout.
Wrong account or workspace: confirm the account and personal/work context that owns the balance.
Separate API limit: an API organization may have a rate, token, monthly, or spend limit unrelated to balance.
Payment or update delay: a purchase can take a short time to appear; check the Usage page and receipt before buying twice.
Automatic reload boundary: a monthly reload cap can stop automatic purchases even though a one-time purchase may remain possible.
Negative balance: OpenAI says concurrent usage can deplete a balance after a task starts; later purchases may offset that negative amount first.

If credits were consumed because of a confirmed account compromise, use OpenAI’s unauthorized-activity/support route. Do not post a credit claim link, API key, receipt, or account screenshot publicly.

Expiry, refunds, and transfers

OpenAI’s current personal-plan guidance says usage credits are valid for 12 months from purchase, unused credits expire rather than roll over, and credits are non-refundable except where required by law. They are also non-transferable and cannot be resold or gifted. Confirm the terms and expiry shown at checkout, especially when using a promotional or gifted balance.

Do ChatGPT credits replace Plus or Pro?

No. They are a pay-as-you-go add-on for supported features. Your plan and its included allowance remain separate.

Can credits remove every ChatGPT message limit?

No. Credits currently apply only to eligible features shown for your account. A model, rate, safety, workspace, or plan limit may remain unaffected.

Wallet funds are separate. Website checkout may apply them for eligible purchases, but a visible wallet balance does not guarantee that every credit purchase accepts it.
