ChatGPT memory is changing in 2026. OpenAI is rolling out a new, continuously updated Memory experience while some accounts still use the legacy saved-memories and chat-history controls. A result that looks like “memory is broken” may be a rollout difference, a disabled setting, or the wrong memory system for what you expected ChatGPT to recall.

1. Identify which Memory interface your account has
Open ChatGPT settings and go to Personalization → Memory. A newer account may show a Memory summary that updates automatically. An account on the legacy experience may instead show separate controls named Reference saved memories and Reference chat history. The exact controls can vary by plan, country, and rollout stage.
On the legacy interface, turning off saved memories also turns off reference chat history. Saved memories can remain on while reference chat history is off, but not the reverse. On the new interface, use the Memory summary and its management controls to review or correct remembered information.
2. Ask what ChatGPT currently remembers
Ask, “What do you remember about me?” This checks the saved-memory layer. If an important fact is missing, state it plainly and ask ChatGPT to remember it. Saved memories are better for stable preferences than for exact templates, long instructions, or large blocks of text.
3. Do not expect chat history to recall every detail
Reference chat history selects context that may be useful; it is not a searchable archive that guarantees perfect recall. For information that must stay top of mind, create a saved memory or keep the exact instructions in a reusable document or custom instruction.
4. Check your plan and account
In the legacy experience, OpenAI limits reference chat history to Plus and Pro accounts, while Free accounts have saved memories only. The newer Memory experience is rolling out gradually. If a toggle or summary is missing, verify the active account, plan, country, and rollout status before assuming there is a fault.
5. Archived and deleted chats behave differently from saved memories
Deleting or archiving a conversation stops ChatGPT from referencing that chat through chat history, unless a memory from the conversation was already saved separately. Deleting the chat alone does not necessarily delete the saved memory.
To fully remove a fact, delete the saved memory in Settings → Personalization → Manage Memories and remove the original chat if you also want the old conversation gone.
6. New accounts may need time and history
OpenAI says a new account, a recently enabled setting, or insufficient chat history can explain why no memory summary appears yet. Create a direct saved memory to test the feature rather than waiting for ChatGPT to infer one automatically.
7. Use Temporary Chat intentionally
Temporary Chat is designed not to use or update memory. If ChatGPT appears to ignore known preferences only in a temporary conversation, that is expected behavior rather than a memory failure.
When memory still looks wrong
- Confirm the active account and plan.
- Check both Personalization toggles.
- Ask what is currently saved.
- Delete a wrong saved memory and add the corrected fact explicitly.
- Start a normal new chat, not a Temporary Chat.
- Check OpenAI Status if the controls disappear unexpectedly.
