Original plan review · July 23, 2026; Fable access note checked September 28, 2026
October 8 update: Max API-credit eligibility, monthly cost examples and purchase-route billing notes were checked against current official documentation. The original plan and Fable review dates above are retained; this is not a new account test or a simultaneous review of every feature.
Claude Pro is the best starting point for many regular interactive users. Max 5x and Max 20x add capacity, and eligible Max subscribers can now claim separate API credits. For app builders, compare the combined subscription and API bill before choosing a tier.
The short answer
- Pro: Best for regular personal use at $20 monthly or $200 annually.
- Max 5x: Best for frequent work that regularly exceeds Pro capacity.
- Max 20x: Best for daily, intensive Claude use where interruptions have a real cost.
Claude plan comparison
| Plan | Current US price | Usage capacity | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pro | $20/month or $200/year | Standard paid capacity | Regular use |
| Max 5x | $100/month | 5x Pro capacity per session | Frequent professional use |
| Max 20x | $200/month | 20x Pro capacity per session | Heavy daily collaboration |
Anthropic’s comparison describes these as individual plans. Teams that need administration, centralized billing, or organizational controls should compare Team and Enterprise instead.
What Claude Pro is good for
Pro is designed for regular use and is dramatically less expensive than either Max tier. It is the logical first paid plan for writing, document analysis, coding, research, and normal multi-turn work.
Pro also has an annual option. At the current US prices, $200 per year is lower than paying $20 for twelve separate months. Annual billing makes sense only if you expect to keep the service and accept paying in advance.
What Max changes
Max primarily gives much more usage capacity. Anthropic describes Max 5x as five times Pro capacity per session and Max 20x as twenty times Pro capacity per session. This is useful for long coding sessions, large document workflows, and repeated professional tasks that exhaust Pro.
A Max subscription does not make every simple prompt five or twenty times better. Additional capacity can reduce interruptions; claimable API credits can also change the cost of a separate application. Neither benefit establishes that a particular answer will be better.
Does Max’s monthly API credit make it cheaper than Pro?
For an eligible active plan, the current program offers $100 per cycle on Max 5x and $200 on Max 20x; Pro is excluded. New subscribers wait seven days and must link a Console organization. Unused credit expires without rollover. It does not raise the Claude app’s allowance. Official API-credit program.
Value the spending you would avoid, not the credit’s face value. A developer who already needs the app and a compatible API workload has a different decision from someone who only chats. Use your expected covered API spending in the same billing cycle, not an invented workload created to use the benefit.
| Planned covered API usage | Pro + separately paid API | Eligible Max 5x after claiming |
|---|---|---|
| $60 | $20 + $60 = $80 | $100 plan; $60 of the $100 credit used |
| $100 | $20 + $100 = $120 | $100 plan; $100 credit used |
In the first example, Max costs $20 more despite its $100 benefit. In the second, it costs $20 less. These are arithmetic examples, not measured bills. They assume the same eligible API jobs, monthly web plan prices, a full cycle after eligibility, successfully claimed credits and no other charges. Annual Pro billing, a partial first cycle, mobile prices, tax, app fees or excluded requests can change the comparison. Max web prices; Pro pricing.
The extra $100 for Max 20x is not automatically recovered merely because its API-credit amount is $100 higher. Count only additional covered work you genuinely need beyond Max 5x’s credit, alongside any worthwhile extra interactive capacity. If you do not need Claude’s subscription product at all, compare API-only as another alternative.
Before counting the credit as savings
- Check eligibility, the linked organization, amount and expiry in Console. Link carefully: the organization cannot be changed through self-service. Review the provider’s terms yourself before accepting.
- Separate covered first-party API work from interactive Code, app extra usage and partner clouds. For
claude -p, follow the SDK authentication distinction, not the command name alone. - Inspect existing spend caps and auto-reload. Purchased-balance auto-reload can run even while included credits remain; a promotional balance is not a guarantee of no card charge.
Those account and spending conditions are documented in the program guide. HiseHub has not linked an organization, accepted terms, claimed credits or run a paid request for this article. For the broader decision, use subscription versus API cost and the useful-result worksheet.
When Max 5x is worth it
- You hit the Pro allowance in normal working sessions.
- Recreating context in another tool wastes meaningful time.
- You use Claude for paid work several days each week.
- You need more capacity but cannot justify the highest monthly tier.
Max 5x is the sensible trial upgrade because it exposes whether additional capacity actually changes your workflow before you commit to Max 20x.
When Max 20x is worth it
Max 20x fits daily users who collaborate with Claude across most tasks and can quantify the cost of hitting lower limits. It is harder to justify for casual use, even if you occasionally work with a large document.
If the extra $100 over Max 5x does not save at least that amount in time or alternative-tool costs each month, stay on the lower tier.
How usage limits actually behave
Capacity is not a fixed number of messages. Prompt length, attachments, model choice, conversation length, and feature use can all change how quickly an allowance is consumed. A long chat with large files can use capacity faster than many short text conversations.
For that reason, do not choose a plan by estimating messages alone. Test your real workflow and watch how often Claude shows a reset time.
Fable has a separate access condition
Anthropic’s current pricing table, checked September 28, 2026, lists Fable via usage credits on Pro and at 50% of weekly limits on both Max tiers. Free does not list Fable access. This is a model-specific allowance, not a promise of unlimited messages. Check your account’s model picker and usage meter; the Model Access Map separates these consumer-plan conditions from API access.
Upgrade and billing notes
- Pro can be billed monthly or annually.
- Max 5x and Max 20x are monthly plans.
- Web upgrades normally take effect immediately with prorated billing. Google Play instead charges the new plan’s full price and converts unused value into extra days.
- A remaining annual Pro balance can become subscription account credit under Anthropic’s conditions, including matching billing addresses. It is not the monthly Console API-credit balance.
- Paid plans are limited to supported locations and eligible accounts. Check the actual renewal quote and purchase-route billing notes before upgrading.
Pro or Max: final recommendation
For interactive-only work, begin with Pro and upgrade when limits become a recurring cost. If you also build with the API, compare actual covered spending using the credit section above. Choose Max 5x or 20x only when the combined capacity and usable credit justify the actual bill; an unused credit is not money saved.
