When a ChatGPT upload fails, check the file itself before changing browsers or reinstalling the app. File size, document length, rolling upload limits, and shared storage caps can all produce similar-looking errors.
Quick diagnosis
- Confirm the file is within the applicable size and document limits.
- Check that you are signed into the intended ChatGPT account and plan.
- Try one small PDF or TXT file in a new chat.
- Check OpenAI Status for an upload incident.
- If the message says “upload limit reached,” wait for the rolling limit to reset and avoid repeated failed attempts.

OpenAI says upload limits may be lowered during peak periods. It also distinguishes between a rolling upload-rate cap and a storage cap, so deleting one chat may not immediately resolve every “limit reached” message.
1. Reduce the file to a clean test case
Start with a small, ordinary file such as a short PDF or TXT document. If that succeeds, the original file may be too large, too long, damaged, password-protected, or unusually complex.
- Export the document again as a standard PDF.
- Split a very long document into logical sections.
- Remove embedded media that is not needed for the task.
- Save a spreadsheet with fewer sheets or rows.
- Resize an image below 20 MB.
2. Understand the token limit
A document can be far below 512 MB and still exceed the text limit. The 2-million-token cap applies to text and document files, not spreadsheets. A long OCR result, source-code archive converted to text, or document with repeated content can cross the token limit while remaining small on disk.
3. Check rolling upload limits and failed attempts
OpenAI notes that failed upload attempts can count toward the upload-rate cap. Repeatedly retrying the same failing file can therefore make the situation worse. Stop retrying, wait for the rolling window to reset, then test once with a small file.
ChatGPT currently does not show how much of the rolling upload-rate quota remains. It may show storage information under Settings → Storage, but that is separate from the short-term upload rate.
4. Confirm the account and plan
If you use multiple ChatGPT accounts or workspaces, verify the active account before troubleshooting. Free users have a much lower daily file allowance than paid users, and organization storage is shared across members.
5. Rule out a browser, app, or network problem
- Start a new chat and upload one small file.
- Temporarily disable aggressive content blockers for ChatGPT.
- Try a private window or another current browser.
- Update the ChatGPT mobile app if the problem occurs only on a phone.
- Try a stable network without a restrictive corporate proxy or VPN.
These steps are useful only after the file and account limits have been checked. Switching browsers cannot bypass an account-level upload or storage cap.
6. What to send to OpenAI Support
If a small supported file fails and there is no known service incident, prepare the account email, a screenshot, the exact timestamp and timezone, the browser or app version, and the request ID if one appears. Do not send the confidential file itself unless support specifically provides a secure route and you are authorized to share it.
