Grok Weekly Limit: Reset Time, Shared Pool & Extra Credits

Shared weekly AI usage pool connected to chat voice image and coding tools

Grok’s paid weekly limit is a shared pool, not a fixed number of messages. On the newer SuperGrok system, Chat, Imagine, Voice, and Build can draw from the same weekly allowance. The exact reset day and time are account-specific: open Settings → Usage and use the schedule shown there. It is not safe to assume that the pool resets at midnight, on Monday, or exactly seven days after your last prompt.

The short answer

  • The paid allowance is one flexible weekly pool for eligible Grok products, although rollout and product availability can vary.
  • The Usage screen shows the percentage used, a product breakdown, the next weekly reset, and any Extra Usage Credits balance.
  • Text, image, video, voice, and coding work do not consume the pool at one fixed rate; higher-compute work can move the meter faster.
  • When the paid pool is full, paid features may pause. Depending on the account, separate free Chat or Voice limits may still be available.
  • For occasional overflow, Extra Usage Credits or Auto Top Up may help. If the same account runs out most weeks, compare a higher plan instead.

What does “shared weekly pool” mean?

xAI says it is rolling out a simpler paid usage system in which one weekly allowance can be spent across Grok products. That is different from the older mental model of a separate daily counter for Chat, Imagine, Voice, and Build. If you use the same paid account for a long coding task and then generate video, both activities can affect the remaining weekly percentage.

“Shared” describes how eligible product usage is counted. It does not mean every screen, subscription, or xAI service has identical billing. The Usage breakdown may show labels such as API, Build, Chat, Imagine, and Voice. A label in that breakdown is not, by itself, proof that consumer SuperGrok usage and xAI API prepaid credits are the same balance. The xAI API billing documentation describes a separate team/API credit system.

How to find your exact reset time

  1. Open Grok on the web or in the iOS/Android app.
  2. Confirm that you are signed in to the account that owns the paid plan.
  3. Open Settings, then choose Usage.
  4. Read the weekly reset date and time, current percentage, product breakdown, and Extra Usage Credits balance.

The schedule shown in the account is the useful answer to “when does Grok reset?” xAI’s FAQ does not give one universal reset hour for every subscriber. Your assigned schedule can also remain fixed from week to week rather than moving whenever you start a new conversation.

Question What the official guidance supports Practical interpretation
What resets? The paid weekly usage pool resets on the schedule shown in Settings → Usage. Use the displayed timer, not a guessed weekday or midnight.
What is shared? Eligible Grok products can draw from one pool, with a breakdown by product. Imagine or Build activity can reduce later Chat capacity.
Does one prompt equal one unit? No. Different actions use different amounts of compute. A prompt count cannot predict the remaining percentage.
What happens at the limit? Paid features pause until reset, unless you use an available overflow option. Check whether free Chat/Voice limits are still separate on your account.
Can I continue now? Extra Usage Credits, Auto Top Up, or a higher plan may be offered. Choose based on frequency and urgency, not on the percentage alone.

Why does the weekly percentage rise faster than expected?

xAI explains that the pool is tied to the computation required by a task. A short text exchange generally needs less compute than a high-quality video, a long coding task, or repeated image generation. That is why “I only sent ten prompts” is not enough evidence that the meter is wrong.

  • Imagine: repeated image or video generations can use more capacity than ordinary text chat.
  • Build: a long agentic or coding workflow may perform many steps even if you sent only one instruction.
  • Mixed products: Chat, Voice, Imagine, and Build can all draw from the shared allowance when they are included for the account.
  • Long or complex work: tasks requiring more computation can move the percentage faster than a simple question.
  • Another session: a second browser, phone, or family member using the same account can consume the same pool.

Treat the percentage and product breakdown as the primary evidence. xAI does not publish a stable “one message equals X percent” conversion that can be applied to every account and task.

What happens when Grok reaches 100%?

According to xAI’s current FAQ, paid features pause when the weekly usage limit is met. Some accounts can still use separate free-tier limits for Chat and Voice, but those limits have their own rules and reset schedule. Reaching the paid weekly limit is therefore not necessarily the same as losing every form of Grok access.

Before buying anything, follow this order:

  1. Open Settings → Usage and confirm the account, percentage, product breakdown, and displayed reset time.
  2. Check whether the warning refers to the paid weekly pool, a free-tier limit, a product-specific cap, or an account/billing issue.
  3. If the reset is close, wait and retry after the displayed time. Refresh the app or web session if the meter does not update.
  4. If work cannot wait, check whether the web Usage screen offers Extra Usage Credits or Auto Top Up.
  5. If the same account reaches the limit during most weeks, compare the next plan tier rather than repeatedly paying standard-rate overflow.

Extra Usage Credits: what they do and do not do

Extra Usage Credits are an overflow option for paid features after the included weekly usage is exhausted. xAI’s FAQ says they are added immediately, can currently be purchased on the web, and normally expire one year after purchase unless the checkout terms say otherwise. The same FAQ states that web purchases can start at $5, but amounts, eligibility, and checkout behavior can change.

The purchase is not an early weekly reset. It is a separate pay-as-you-go balance used after included usage. xAI also says the effective cost per action is higher than the rate represented by included plan usage. Keep the following boundaries in mind:

  • Mobile apps may show the balance, but the current purchase path is the web Usage screen; do not assume an in-app purchase is available.
  • Credits are not a promise of unlimited generation or a fixed number of chats.
  • Expiry and checkout terms should be read at purchase time, especially if the account displays a different condition.
  • Consumer Extra Usage Credits should not be confused with prepaid xAI API credits managed in an API team.

Auto Top Up: convenient, but set a boundary

Auto Top Up can add credits when the balance becomes low. xAI says you choose the amount and a monthly cap. That can prevent a work interruption, but it also creates a path for spending to continue during a compute-heavy session. Set a conservative cap first, then review the Usage breakdown before increasing it.

If a top-up option is missing, do not assume that your plan or region is broken. Features can roll out at different times, and the account’s Usage screen is more reliable than a generic screenshot. A top-up also does not change the weekly pool’s reset time or make each action cost the same.

Wait, top up, upgrade, or use the API?

Your situation Most defensible next step Why
The displayed reset is soon and the task is not urgent. Wait for the reset. You avoid paying standard-rate overflow for a short gap.
You occasionally need a deadline-critical image, video, or coding task. Consider a small web credit purchase with a cap. It solves occasional overflow without changing the recurring plan.
You hit the weekly pool most weeks. Compare the next SuperGrok tier. xAI says a higher plan generally provides more weekly usage at a lower effective cost per action than repeated top-ups.
You are building software, need keys, logs, or predictable request billing. Evaluate the xAI API separately. API prepaid credits, teams, rate limits, and consumer subscriptions are different billing contexts.

The best choice depends on frequency, urgency, and the full task—not just the headline subscription price. Our Grok Extra Usage Credits guide covers top-up costs and expiry, while this usage-percentage diagnosis helps identify which product is consuming the pool.

Common misunderstandings

“Weekly” means Monday morning, right?

Not necessarily. xAI tells users to read the reset schedule in Settings → Usage. The account-specific date and time are the source of truth.

Does a separate Chat counter mean the weekly pool is not shared?

No. A product breakdown can show where the shared pool was used. It does not necessarily represent an independent paid allowance.

Will Extra Usage Credits give me more weekly allowance?

They provide paid overflow after included usage. They do not move the next scheduled reset earlier or convert every action into a fixed quantity of messages.

Can I buy credits inside the mobile app?

The current xAI FAQ says Extra Usage Credits can be purchased on the web and that in-app purchases are planned for the future. Check your account rather than relying on an older app screenshot.

Is the Grok API the same as the weekly SuperGrok pool?

Do not assume that. The consumer Usage screen and the API Console have different access and billing contexts. Use the API billing documentation when your task involves an API key or team balance.
