They are useful for occasional overages. If you run out of included usage most weeks, xAI says upgrading is usually better value because extra credits are charged at standard rates rather than the lower effective rate of the allowance bundled with a subscription.

How the weekly pool and extra credits work
Paid Grok plans now use one shared weekly usage pool across products such as Chat, Imagine, Voice, Build, and eligible API activity shown in Grok. Instead of receiving a separate daily bucket for each product, you can spend the weekly pool across the features you use.
Different actions do not consume the same amount. A short chat can require far less compute than a high-quality video, an extended coding task, or another intensive operation. That is why a credit balance cannot be converted into one reliable number of messages, images, or videos.
You can monitor the pool in Settings → Usage. The page shows:
- the percentage of the weekly pool already used;
- a breakdown by product;
- the next weekly reset date and time;
- any Extra Usage Credits balance.
When the weekly pool reaches 100%, paid features pause until the reset unless you buy extra credits, use an available credit balance, or upgrade. Separate free-tier limits for Chat and Voice may still be available.

How to buy Grok Extra Usage Credits
Use Grok in a desktop or mobile web browser:
- Sign in at Grok with the same account that owns the paid plan.
- Open Settings.
- Select Usage.
- Find the Extra Usage Credits section.
- Choose a top-up amount. xAI currently allows purchases starting at $5.
- Review the currency, amount, payment method, and any taxes before confirming.
The credit balance should be added immediately after a successful purchase. It will remain unused while included weekly capacity is available, then begin paying for eligible usage after that capacity is exhausted.

Why you cannot buy the credits in the mobile app
xAI currently says Extra Usage Credits are web-only. An iOS or Android app may show usage information without offering a purchase button.
This does not necessarily mean that your plan is broken. Open grok.com in a browser, sign in with the subscription account, and check Settings → Usage there. xAI says mobile in-app purchases are planned for the future, but it does not provide a guaranteed release date.
Do not create a second account just to make the purchase. Credits and subscriptions are tied to the relevant account, so buying under a different login may leave the balance unavailable in your usual workspace.
How much does each action cost?
xAI does not publish a universal conversion such as “$5 equals 100 prompts.” Extra Usage Credits are priced at standard rates, and the charge depends on the compute required by the selected product and action.
Consumption can change with:
- the model or mode;
- prompt and conversation length;
- image or video quality;
- task duration;
- tool use and other compute-heavy features.
The practical method is to buy a small amount, note the balance, perform a representative task, and review the Usage page. Do not use a third-party message-count calculator as a guarantee.
The subscription allowance is generally the cheaper capacity. xAI explicitly says that its included weekly usage has a lower effective cost per action than repeated top-ups.
When do Grok credits expire?
Top-up credits expire one year after purchase unless the purchase screen states otherwise. The one-year period applies to each purchase, so separately purchased batches may have different expiration dates.
Before making a large purchase:
- check the term displayed during checkout;
- estimate how much you actually use after the weekly pool is exhausted;
- avoid treating credits as permanent account value;
- keep the receipt and purchase date.
Because the balance is prepaid and time-limited, buying a large reserve only makes sense when you expect to consume it within the stated term.
How Auto Top Up works
Auto Top Up adds credits when the balance falls below a threshold. You choose the top-up amount and a monthly cap, giving you a way to continue working without authorizing unlimited reloads.
To configure it:
- Open Settings → Usage on the web.
- Locate Auto Top Up in the Extra Usage Credits area.
- Select the reload amount.
- Set a monthly cap you are comfortable paying.
- Review the saved payment method and confirm the setting.
A conservative cap is safer than an unrestricted budget. Start low, monitor the first month, and increase it only when actual work justifies the additional cost.
Auto Top Up prevents interruptions, but it does not lower the rate or increase the weekly subscription pool. It simply keeps a prepaid balance available after included usage is gone.
Credits or a higher Grok plan?
Choose Extra Usage Credits when:
- you exceed the weekly limit only occasionally;
- a one-off project creates a temporary spike;
- waiting for the weekly reset would interrupt paid work;
- you want to test how much overflow usage really costs.
Consider upgrading when:
- you reach the weekly limit most weeks;
- Auto Top Up triggers repeatedly;
- the monthly cost of top-ups approaches the price difference between plans;
- high-compute products such as video or long coding tasks are a regular workflow.
xAI describes upgrading as significantly better value per action for recurring heavy use. The right comparison is therefore not just the next plan’s sticker price. Compare the monthly upgrade difference with your actual top-up spending and the time lost when usage pauses.
Avoid surprise charges
Use these controls before relying on extra credits:
- Set a realistic monthly Auto Top Up cap.
- Check Settings → Usage after intensive tasks.
- Turn off Auto Top Up when a short-term project ends.
- Confirm that you are using the intended account.
- Keep account access protected with a strong, unique login.
- Review renewal and top-up receipts separately.
Also distinguish top-ups from the recurring SuperGrok subscription. Buying credits does not cancel, extend, or replace the underlying plan.

Extra Usage Credits vs xAI API credits
Grok Extra Usage Credits belong to the consumer Grok usage system. xAI API credits belong to the API Console and pay for programmatic requests made with API keys.
Do not assume that a balance in one system can be transferred to or spent in the other. Check the billing page where the purchase was made:

This distinction is especially important when a Usage breakdown includes the word “API.” The consumer help page and the developer Console still have separate billing contexts.
