Grok Weekly Usage Limit Explained: Resets and Extra Credits

Shared weekly AI usage pool connected to chat voice image and coding tools

Verified against xAI documentation · July 23, 2026

Grok’s paid consumer plans now use one shared weekly usage pool across products such as Chat, Imagine, Voice, and Build. Heavy image, video, or coding work can consume the pool faster than normal text chat.

The short answer

  • The paid allowance resets weekly at the time shown in Settings → Usage.
  • Different Grok products draw from the same pool at different rates.
  • Paid features pause when the pool is exhausted, but separate free-tier access may remain.
  • You can wait, upgrade, or buy Extra Usage Credits on the web.

What changed with Grok limits?

xAI began rolling out a shared weekly system for paid users in June 2026. Previously, products could have separate daily limits. Under the newer system, the account receives one weekly pool that can be spent across supported Grok products.

The change makes the allowance more flexible, but it also means an expensive activity in one product can reduce what remains for another. A long video-generation session can affect later Chat or Voice capacity.

What consumes the weekly pool?

  • Text conversations in Chat
  • Image and video generation in Imagine
  • Voice interactions
  • Grok Build and other agentic or coding work
  • Other eligible usage listed in the account’s Usage breakdown

xAI says products consume different amounts based on required computation. A short text answer costs less capacity than high-quality video or a long coding task. The percentage meter is therefore more useful than counting prompts.

How to check the reset time

  1. Open Grok on the web or mobile app.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Select Usage.
  4. Review the percentage used, product breakdown, Extra Usage Credits balance, and weekly reset date.

The weekly reset follows the schedule shown in the account. It should not be assumed to occur at midnight, on Monday, or exactly seven days after a particular prompt.

What happens at 100%?

When the included paid pool is exhausted, paid features pause until the reset unless the account uses Extra Usage Credits or upgrades. xAI says separate free-tier limits for Chat and Voice can still be available, although those free allowances have their own reset rules.

If Grok still shows a block after the weekly reset time, refresh the app, sign out and back in, confirm the account, and inspect Settings → Usage before purchasing anything.

How Extra Usage Credits work

Extra Usage Credits are pay-as-you-go funds used after the included weekly pool. xAI currently says they can be purchased on the web, start from a small amount, and normally expire one year after purchase unless the checkout terms say otherwise.

  • Credits are added to the account after purchase.
  • Included weekly usage is used before the extra balance.
  • Different actions consume the balance at different standard rates.
  • Occasional top-ups can prevent a short interruption.
  • Frequent top-ups may cost more per action than a higher subscription tier.

What is Auto Top Up?

Auto Top Up can automatically add credits when the balance becomes low. The account owner chooses the amount and a monthly cap. Set a conservative cap before enabling it, because high-compute activities can use a balance faster than text chat.

Why usage may rise too quickly

  • High-resolution or repeated video generation
  • Long image-generation sessions
  • Large coding or Build tasks
  • Multiple products using the same weekly pool
  • Another signed-in device using the account

Use the product percentage breakdown to identify the source. Do not rely on the number of visible chats alone.

Should you wait, top up, or upgrade?

Wait when the reset is close, buy credits for occasional overflow, and upgrade when the same plan runs out during most weeks. xAI notes that higher plans generally provide included usage at a lower effective cost per action than repeatedly purchasing extra credits.
